How to use the sod calculator
1. Measure the length and width of the area to lay, in feet. If your yard is irregular — curves, beds, paths — split it into rectangles, run each one through the calculator, and add up the rolls. 2. Adjust the waste percentage. The default is 10%, typical for a simple rectangular lot. Raise it to 15% when there are lots of curves, slopes, or trimmed edges, where more sod is wasted fitting the pieces. 3. Set each roll's coverage, in square feet. The default is 10 sq ft (a standard roll about 2 ft × 5 ft). If your grower sells slabs of a different size, enter their real coverage. 4. Read the result. You get the total area in square feet, the rolls needed with the waste already included (rounded up, because you cannot buy a fraction of a roll), and the number of pallets your order will fill, assuming about 500 sq ft per pallet.
The pallet count helps you schedule delivery and unloading: live sod should be installed within 24 hours of delivery, so order only the pallets you can lay the same day. Always keep the same unit across length, width, and roll coverage: if you measure in feet, the coverage is in square feet too.
Worked sod rolls and pallets examples
The calculator chains three simple operations. With length and width in feet, waste as a percentage, and roll coverage in square feet:
total area = length × width area with waste = total area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) rolls needed = round up of (area with waste ÷ roll coverage) pallets = round up of (rolls × roll coverage ÷ 500)
Worked example (the defaults). A 20 ft × 15 ft yard, with 10% waste and 10 sq ft rolls:
- total area = 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
- area with waste = 300 × 1.10 = 330 sq ft
- rolls needed = ceil(330 ÷ 10) = ceil(33) = 33 rolls
- pallets = ceil(33 × 10 ÷ 500) = ceil(0.66) = 1 pallet
A quick list of other typical cases, all with 10 sq ft rolls:
- Large yard: 50 × 40 ft, 10% waste → 2,000 sq ft, 220 rolls, 5 pallets.
- Small lot: 8 × 6 ft, 15% waste → 48 sq ft, 6 rolls, 1 pallet.
- Wide lot: 100 × 55 ft, 10% waste → 5,500 sq ft, 606 rolls, 13 pallets.
Notice the rolls always round up: an exact 33.0 rolls stays 33, but 48 sq ft with waste (52.8 sq ft) gives ceil(5.28) = 6 rolls. Keep a couple of spare rolls on hand to replace any that tear while you handle them.
Context: rolls, pallets, and sod waste
Sod is grown on specialized farms and cut into strips or slabs of standardized size. In the US market an individual roll typically covers about 10 sq ft (roughly 0.9 m²) and a pallet groups 400 to 500 sq ft; that is why the tool takes 500 sq ft per pallet and 10 sq ft per roll as reference values, both adjustable to your supplier. In other regions sod is often sold by the square meter of rolled turf, but the logic is identical: area, waste allowance, and grouping into pallets.
Why waste matters. No lawn is a perfect rectangle. Fitting rolls against edges, beds, trees, and paths creates offcuts that are not always reused. The industry standard is to add 5 to 10% over the measured area for a regular lot, and up to 15% when there are many curves or grade changes. This calculator applies that percentage before dividing by the roll coverage, so the rolls you see already include the waste: ordering short means a second trip to the grower, and live sod will not wait.
Why it rounds up. Growers sell whole rolls and pallets, not fractions. So both rolls and pallets are rounded up with the ceiling function: if the math gives 5.28 rolls, you need 6; if it gives 4.4 pallets, you need 5. The pallet count the tool returns is computed from the already-rounded rolls — that is, from the real quantity you will receive, not from the theoretical area.
Installation best practices. Sod is perishable: once cut and rolled, it should be installed within 24 to 36 hours, before the roots heat up inside the pallet. Schedule delivery for the same day you plan to lay it, water the prepared base right before unrolling, and stagger the seams like a brick wall so the edges do not line up. A couple of spare rolls will cover you if any arrive damaged.
