The scientific dog age formula (UCSD 2019)
For decades people repeated that one dog year equals seven human years. It is a myth: it has no scientific basis and fails at both ends of a dog's life. In 2019, a team at the University of California San Diego (Wang et al., published in the journal Cell Systems) compared the DNA methylation patterns — the so-called epigenetic clock — of dogs and humans and derived a non-linear formula:
human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
Where ln is the natural logarithm (logarithm to base e). The key idea is that aging is not proportional: a puppy matures very fast and then the pace slows down. That is why a 1-year-old dog already maps to about 31 human years, but going from 8 to 16 dog years adds far fewer human years than a linear rule would suggest.
The original formula is valid from the first year of life onward (it needs age ≥ 1 because the logarithm of zero or of numbers below 1 gives results that are meaningless for this model). For puppies under one year we use a popular approximation: dog age × 15, which reflects how fast they grow in their first months.
We apply a size factor to that base, because veterinary evidence shows large dogs age somewhat faster and live shorter lives than small ones:

- Medium: × 1.00 (the original formula with no adjustment)
- Large: × 1.10
Worked example. A medium dog aged 5 years: ln(5) = 1.6094; 16 × 1.6094 = 25.751; 25.751 + 31 = 56.751 human years. Since it is medium-sized, the factor is 1.00, so the result stays at 56.75 years, which we round to 57 human years.

If you don't know the exact birth date (common with rescue dogs), use your vet's age estimate, which is based on tooth wear and other signs. 2. Pick the size. One important detail: below one year the logarithmic formula stops making sense, so for puppies the calculator automatically switches to the age × 15 approximation. That's why a 6-month-old puppy (0.5 years) comes out as 8 human years, a stage that matches the energy and learning phase of a child.

Notice the early jump: going from puppy to 1 year is like jumping from 8 to 31 human years, because the first year packs in enormous maturity. After that the pace slows: from 1 to 2 dog years adds 11 human years, but from 5 to 10 dog years adds only about 18 — spread over twice as long.
The size effect is visible too: the 10-year-old large dog reaches 75 human years, whereas with the medium factor (× 1.00) it would be 67.84 → 68. That is why large dogs are considered senior earlier than small ones, and it pays to bring forward geriatric check-ups with the vet.
Why the times-7 myth is false and what science says
The multiply-by-7 rule probably appeared in the 1950s as a marketing device to encourage people to take their dog to the vet at least once a year. It is easy to remember, but it clashes with biology: a 1-year-old dog can already reproduce and has essentially reached its adult size, nothing like a 7-year-old human child. At the other end, many dogs live 15 years or more, and multiplying by 7 would give 105 human years, an equivalence that doesn't fit either.
The 2019 UCSD study (Tina Wang, Trey Ideker and colleagues, Cell Systems) tackled the problem through epigenetics. With age, certain spots on the DNA accumulate methyl groups in a predictable way; that pattern acts as a molecular clock. Comparing the clock of 104 Labrador Retrievers with that of thousands of humans, they found a logarithmic relationship: canine aging is very fast at first and slows down over the years. Hence the formula 16 × ln(age) + 31.
It's important to understand the model's limits. It was calibrated mainly on Labradors, so it is a general approximation; the real pace of aging varies with breed, size and individual genetics. That is why many calculators — including this one — add a size adjustment, drawing on the veterinary observation that large and giant breeds age earlier than small ones.
